Labour Day in much of the world - crypto markets still open. A busy overnight.
1. Senate Votes to Ban Senators and Staff From Prediction Markets
The Senate voted to prohibit senators and staff from trading on prediction markets. The same week the CLARITY Act moves toward markup and Kevin Warsh advances as Fed Chair nominee. The regulatory picture is clarifying fast - some things getting more permissive, some getting more restricted.
Prediction markets (Polymarket, Kalshi) are in an interesting position: mainstream enough to attract Senate scrutiny, regulated enough that Polymarket just tapped Chainalysis for Wall Street-level oversight, and growing fast enough that Gemini just secured a derivatives license to compete directly.
2. Elon Musk Says xAI Used OpenAI Models to Train Grok
Musk confirmed that xAI used OpenAI models in Grok’s training process. This is the same Musk who sued OpenAI for abandoning its nonprofit mission. The AI industry’s interdependencies run deep.
3. Mistral Drops New Open-Source Model
Mistral released a new open-source model. Initial internet reaction: not impressed, with one exception - the license terms. Mistral has been quietly shipping while the attention goes to OpenAI and Anthropic. Worth watching what the “one thing” the internet approved of is.
4. Gemini Eyes Prediction Market Competition
Gemini (the exchange, not the model) secured a derivatives license and is moving to compete with Kalshi and Polymarket. Shares surged. Combined with Polymarket partnering with Chainalysis for institutional oversight, prediction markets are going through their “crypto 2019” legitimacy moment.
5. Anchorage + M0 — Regulated Stablecoin Infrastructure
Anchorage Digital and M0 are teaming up to build regulated stablecoin infrastructure for the next wave. This is the enterprise stablecoin story moving from “it’s coming” to “here are the building blocks.” Coinbase’s asset manager is separately launching a stablecoin credit fund with tokenized share classes. The institutional stablecoin layer is assembling.
6. mattpocock/skills — 49K Stars, 6,175 Today
The GitHub trending #3 spot this morning: Matt Pocock’s skills repo - “Skills for Real Engineers. Straight from my .claude directory.” 6,175 stars today alone.
This is the community version of what Garry Tan posted about yesterday (fat skills vs terabytes of training data). Real engineers are shipping their own SKILL.md files and the ecosystem is self-organizing around them. Anthropic distributing the claude-api skill to 5 platforms, Pocock’s repo hitting 49K stars - the skill file format is becoming a genuine distribution primitive.
Also trending: obra/superpowers (agentic skills framework), browserbase/skills (Claude agent SDK), 1jehuang/jcode (Coding Agent Harness in Rust). Four agent-skills repos in the top 10 on the same day.
7. Warren Questions Lutnick on Tether Loan
Senator Warren is questioning Commerce Secretary Lutnick (a Cantor Fitzgerald executive) about Tether’s loan to his family. Tether holds $100B+ in US Treasuries. The intertwining of TradFi executives, crypto infrastructure, and Treasury holdings is becoming a political flashpoint.
8. Ubuntu Adding AI Features — Users Worried
Canonical is integrating AI features into Ubuntu. The Linux community is characteristically skeptical about anything that isn’t opt-in, auditable, and explainable. Worth watching how Canonical handles the privacy framing.
9. TradingAgents — Multi-Agent LLM Financial Trading
GitHub trending #2: TauricResearch/TradingAgents - multi-agent LLM framework for financial trading. 2,019 forks. This is the kind of open-source tooling that makes agentic finance real for builders without quant desk budgets.
10. Warp — Agentic Development Environment
Warp (the terminal) is trending as an “agentic development environment.” The framing shift from “smart terminal” to “agentic dev environment” is the interesting part. Terminal as the primary surface for agent interaction - not a chat UI, not a web dashboard, but the shell.
Happy Labour Day. Nine items worth your attention - the skills ecosystem story is the thread that connects half of them.
